Cutting boards
The most common question is “How do I maintain my cutting board? ”Maintaining your GingerWoodworks cutting board is quick and easy. Regular maintenance will keep your board sanitary, looking new and extend its life tremendously.
Cleaning and washing your board.
Simply wash with warm soapy water. We recommend washing all sides even if only one side is used. Dry with a towel and store the board standing up or on a raised rack to continue air drying.
Oiling your cutting board
Keeping your cutting board oiled is very simple. So I threw in some tricks that you may not have known.
If your cutting board appears dry, it's time to oil the board. Apply mineral oil or our conditioner directly onto the surface and spread with a cloth or paper towel. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS OVER-CONDITIONING! Make sure the surface is completely coated on all sides with the oil or conditioner. Let the conditioner soak into the cutting board for as long as possible (we recommend overnight).
GingerWoodworks conditioner is created from a specialized ratio of mineral oil to beeswax. As the mineral oil hydrates the wood, the beeswax acts as a physical barrier to protect the wood from liquids and staining, filling micro-scratches and cut marks.
Note that new cutting boards may require extra application of conditioner until your board is completely saturated.
Tips
When color starts to diminish, re-apply mineral oil or wood conditioner.
Do not use vegetable oil to condition your woodwork — it will go rancid over time.
To prevent any cracking or warping:
- Do not soak or submerge in water.
- Do not use in the dishwasher or microwave.
- Do not expose to direct sunlight for long periods of time.
- Do not expose to any heating element (if it’s too hot to hold, it’s too hot for the wood).
- Do not store cutting board in excessively damp or humid environments
